Students as Scribes

I had a really hard time finding an app that would work for my classroom because of the many different age groups I work with. However, I finally found something I can use that truly works! I decided to go with Miro, an online whiteboard. What I loved most about this was that my students could share their abilities with the others in the class no matter what their level was. I chose to stick with math for this week since a lot of my students were learning new strategies to solve math problems. It was also a great opportunity for my older students to help out my younger ones!

I created a problem on the website and shared it with my class. From there, the students had to solve the problem using one of the many strategies they know (I tried to have the 3 students pick different strategies). I had each of my older students try to solve the problem and explain how they got their answer. Once they solved the problem, the younger students could go and see the same problem I assigned with the different strategies used. They could refer back to it at any time to help them solve the problems. They could also try to solve the problem themselves!

It was a huge success in my classroom. The older students really enjoyed helping the younger ones and feeling like the teacher! My younger ones were really receptive to hearing what their older peers had to say. I even saw one of them go over and ask another student to explain how they got their answer again! They wanted to try that strategy out themselves!

You could also use this website for classroom brainstorming and writing activities as well. Every student can see what others are doing or adding to the whiteboard and share ideas with each other. I love the fact that this website is very versatile, you can use it for many subjects and ways! I've already used it a few more times for different projects with my students.

The only problem I found with this website is unless you duplicate the board, if someone changes part of the document shared with them, it will change it on everyones account. I would need to make sure each student has their own whiteboard with the same problem to create and share with others so no ones work would be changed or deleted by accident.
